Taste of the Danforth

Last night, Dan and I spent a few hours roaming Danforth Road for the annual Greek Festival called "Taste of the Danforth." I had been looking forward to this outdoor fest for the last few weeks now, and it definitely didn't disappoint.

The Danforth area is considered Greek town. In Toronto there are several neighborhoods where cultural groups live and work. There is Little Italy, Korea Town, China Town, Greek Village, Cabbagetown, and more. These are great areas to check out and get cultural cuisine. Dan and I were thinking that having all of the Greek restaurants on one street would be bad for business, but they seem to thrive. It is what the area knows.

I've read that Toronto has the third largest Hellenic population in the world outside of Greece. So the festival is a huge production and a great time. Since Dan spent time in college studying in Greece, we have been back for a few weeks to travel, and we are considering it seriously for our next stop, we have a great respect and interest in the Greek culture. Greek Fest was a great way to experience a little bit of that in Toronto.

Enough rambling...basically we rode the subway down to the Danforth area and walked the street for a while just looking at all of the tents and restaurants. There were stages set up on three spots along the road for different performances and people were everywhere! We stopped at a tent for dinner, which was incredible, and wandered down to the end of Danforth where we caught the subway back home.

Here are some pictures from our outing:

Souvlaki pitas for dinner- Amazing!

People filled the streets

Street Signs in Greek

Spinning Meat! It makes the best gyros.

So much food!

And more...

People were loving walking around with wedges of watermelon

Overall, a great time! For those who don't like Greek food, there are plenty of other stands around the festival. We just didn't want to get Thai food at a Greek fest...seemed odd. But the food is definitely the draw. Today, the festival has lots of activities and competitions going on so there are plenty of things to do. We will not be heading down there again today, but a date night to one of the restaurants on the strip is in order for sure!

Hope everyone has a great Saturday!
