Amsterdam Eats

When you think of the Netherlands and Amsterdam, there isn't really a certain type of food that sticks out as a cultural delicacy. So when we were headed to town for 4 days we were slightly nervous about what our meals would look like. When we landed in Amsterdam and were at the airport we ate lunch at Starbucks because we were so worried we wouldn't see normal food again. I think we were a little carbed-out after Italy. Needless to say, we were pleasantly surprised and even loved it.

Again, I can't stress enough how much Patrick made this trip what it was. He knew every little place to eat, snack and get a good cup of coffee all over town. If we had been traveling without any guides in Amsterdam I think we would have a very different outlook on the food.

Here is a rundown of all of the deliciousness we indulged in while enjoying Amsterdam:

Strange on-the-go staple in Amsterdam. Kind of like a fried sausage

On our first day in town, Patrick took us to a 'lunch room' restaurant that we fell in love with. After 4 days of nothing but pasta and pizza, we were so excited to have grilled chicken and hard boiled egg sandwiches. Weird, I know, but in Malta we lived off of chicken. So we had to get back to our roots. I think we ate at this restaurant maybe 3 times in 4 days. We were out of control. But it was clean and delish!

This is actually a chicken sandwich!

Croque Monsieur- amazing!

On our first night in Amsterdam, Denny came into town and we went to a Thai restaurant. It was incredible and I had maybe the best Pad Thai ever from this place. We even saw a Netherlands Soap Opera star there while we were dining. I was pretty excited about that sighting!

Amazing Pad Thai

Someones beef dinner

So much food!

On our second day, Patrick took us to each lunch at a tiny little place that served homemade Suriname food. When he asked us if we liked Suriname food we had no idea so we said we would try it. At one point I seriously thought we were going to have to leave once we walked in. I was very nervous Ben & I weren't going to find anything to eat....but of course we stayed and were blown away by this amazing cuisine. Patrick has been visiting this family run place for years and they knew him by name and were incredibly helpful and kind. We didn't know what we were in for, but I am really glad we tried it.

Plantains with satay sauce....to die for.

Even Ben liked the food!

Of course Dan loved it.

Patrick also talked Dan into trying some Netherland sausage type thing while we were wandering around town. Not sure what it was or what it tasted like, but by the look of this photo the boys were happy.

On our last night in town, Denny came back to hang out and we all had dinner at a Japanese type place where you order a bunch of small dishes and they are little portions and come out in waves. It was very very good and we tried some crazy items. Not too many pictures from this night, but the food was great!

So all in all Amsterdam was a huge success. We had a great time, ate amazing food, hung out with great friends and loved our trip. If you ever have the chance to go visit, do it. The city is much more than legalized marijuana and the Red Light District....I promise. You won't be disappointed.

Our Amsterdam Visit

Beaucoup de Tulips

We had the best and most amazing time visiting Amsterdam in March. We were lucky enough to have a friend who lives there, Patrick, who took so much time out of his life to show us all around town for 4 days. It was amazing. I don't think we would have enjoyed it as much without P as a guide...we saw all the best places and ate all of the best foods.

Canals

Our set up events for Amsterdam were the Van Gogh Museum, the Anne Frank House and the Heineken Museum & Brewery. They were all great to see and experience. I would definitely recommend them to everyone who visits Amsterdam.

Myers Photo Op on a Bridge

The Van Gogh Museum- I really loved getting to walk through and see how his art and skill evolved all while listening to stories about his life starting from childhood. Did you know that Van Gogh had no official training or talent for art. He simply enjoyed painting- some days- and created masterpieces. The museum is very well done and the extra 4 euro for the audio tour was well worth it. You can download a free audio tour on your IPhone or IPod and save the cash.

Outside of the Anne Frank House

The Anne Frank Museum- Dan and I were amazed that the actual office/attic that they lived in was turned into a museum...and we were able to walk through it. It was a crazy experience seeing the stickers on the walls she put up to decorate her tiny space and the lengths they went to in order to stay hidden and alive. A truly remarkable spot to visit. It isn't very noticeable until you get inside though. The museum is nicely camouflaged in a residential neighborhood and the exterior of the building looks as though it were just another house. Very informational and moving.

The Boys at the Heineken

The Heineken Museum- not much to say here as to why we enjoyed this stop :) It has beer. You get to taste the beers with a taste-guide who shows you the best way to drink a beer depending on how you want it to taste. We also mixed some barley and hops and saw the brewing process in action. This stop is very game-centered and much less about the beer than about their branding and the history of the company. Very fun & tasty though!

Stirring the Beer

Since Patrick was born and raised in Amsterdam, he walked us through all of the different neighborhoods and areas and showed us some very cool sites. Some of the ones that stand out are the University and the book fair area where people stock their stands with their used books of all kinds and sell them. Seems simple, but a very interesting little nook within the University.

Ben & Dan at the Heineken Museum

One of my favorite stops was Begijnhof. It is this tiny little cloister neighborhood dating back to the early 14th century. It was originally established as a Roman Catholic cloister for nuns and was taken over by the Presbyterians later on. Lots of history there, but it was magical. We were wandering through one of the main streets and adjoining courtyard type areas when Patrick showed us this large wooden door. When we went through the small outdoor hallway we came upon this pristine courtyard with postage stamp type houses all around. It was quiet and hidden right in the middle of Amsterdam, but gorgeous and simple. I loved it...it kind of felt like a little secret place we got to see.

Statue in the Courtyard of Begijnhof

I am not sure if we loved Amsterdam so much because it was very calm and clean compared to Rome or if it was something else. I think having friends there was a huge plus- Patrick and Denny we can't thank you enough. We just loved the feeling of the city, how clean and welcoming it was, and the diversity. Patrick told us about the Netherlands rule in other countries and how their culture is influenced by many of those places. It seemed to us that the Netherlands went all around the world and took what they saw as the best traits or customs of each place and brought them to Amsterdam. In a sense trying to create a super-culture or super-country.

All of the boys

We did wander through the Red Light District both during the day and at night. It was a weird experience to say the least. I guess if you are raised around it then it becomes normal-ish to you and you aren't phased by it. But it was an experience none the less.

The Book Nook

Our friend Denny was also able to come and hang out with us while we were there. He lives and studies in Rotterdam, but would take the train in at night to come hang out. We had a great time seeing him and so much fun!

Me & Denny Man....Victory!

All in all Amsterdam was the highlight of March. Tomorrow I will blog about the foods we ate while in Amsterdam.

Amsterdam Trip in March

For the month of March we are traveling around Europe to three different places. We start with 4 days in Rome. Thanks to Claire Hoffman for all of her help, we have a ton of things to see, places to eat, and a tour guide set up for a few different things. We are very excited!

Our second stop is Amsterdam. When Dan and I were at the World Series in 2010, we met two poker players- Denny & Patrick- from the Netherlands and have kept in touch with them. We added Amsterdam as a stop for March to not only see the city but to have the chance to catch up with good friends.

I have been talking to Patrick, and sent him a list of ideas of things we thought we wanted to do. I wanted him to let me know if I was missing anything, etc. He is incredible and has sent me back a three day itinerary! He is going to be our official tour guide to all things Amsterdam for 3 1/2 days. We are so excited and beyond greatful to know such amazing people!

So here are some of the highlights of our trip to Amsterdam:

-Bloemenmarket area

-Begijnhof...a community where only women are allowd to life, in a noisy city like Amsterdam it 's a beautiful peacefull place...recommended by Patrick

-The van Gogh museum

-Albertkuyp market...a street market that is popular

-The Heineken experience

-Anne Frank house

-Cafe t Smalle- Fun Fact: it is the favorite cafe of one of Holland most fierced and recently released criminals 'Willem Holleeder" aka De Neus (The Nose). Willem was also responsible for the Kidnapping of Freddie Heineken, and he comes to the cafe from time to time so who knows....

Lots of fun things to do and see in just 3 days, but we are ready.

Hope everyone had a great weekend. I heard great stories from mom & dad's party back home. Sad we missed it.

Happy Valentine's Day to everyone too! Dan and I are going out to dinner to celebrate tonight. We are trying an Argentinian Steak House...should be good.

Other than that we are busy with work and wrapping up travel plans. Nothing new to report. Miss you guys!

xoxo
